This guide is to help you plan your time and is available as a GOOGLE MAP.
Tram travel in Melbourne CBD is free – just look for the sign ‘Free Tram Zone’.
We have included website addresses for more information, and you can use the free wifi in the Mission to Seafarers bus or at the Flying Angel Club.

THE MISSION TO SEAFARERS VICTORIA/FLYING ANGEL CLUB
Start here to explore Melbourne. If you just want to go to the DFO (Direct Factory Outlet) it’s behind the building, on the other side of the river – just an 8-minute walk over the Seafarers Bridge! Open daily 10am-6pm/9pm on Friday
STOP 4 Elizabeth St/Flinders St (Tram 35, 70, 75)
SHOPPING
You can find these shops in other parts of the city, but this stop is handy as they are close to each other.
From the Mission to Seafarers, cross the road and catch tram 70 or 75 from Stop D5 (heading to Flinders St)
COLES – major Australian supermarket good for basic groceries like milk, bread, chips, and chocolate.
KFC – 50m away from Coles
MCDONALDS – across the street from Coles
CHEMIST WAREHOUSE – the best value for vitamins, health products, and medicine. There are 10 locations in the city, but this one is the easiest to get to by tram. Enter on Flinders St and go up the escalator.
DAISO JAPAN – everything is $3.30! Great place for gifts. Next to Chemist Warehouse
COLEMAN’S MUSIC MELBOURNE – family owned local business selling musical equipment, including guitar strings. 5-minute walk from Coles
STOP 5 Swanston St/Flinders St (Tram 35, 70, 75)
FED SQUARE
Fed Square is the cultural and community heart of Melbourne. Opposite Flinders St Station, Fed Square is a great spot for people watching, a tourist destination, and venue for thousands of events a year – and most are free!
Until 31 March 2025 ‘OPEN AIR IN THE SQUARE’ will host free concerts, film screenings, DJs, and community festivals. It is also the best place to watch the Australian Open and other sporting events on the big screen.
IAN POTTER CENTRE: NGV AUSTRALIA (National Gallery Victoria) hosts free exhibitions of Australian art – new and old – including many First Nations artists.
ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) If you movies and to watch TV, then the interactive exhibition The Story of the Moving Image is for you! Explore and discover a universe of new films, TV shows, video games and art to watch, play and experience – and it’s free.

The place to go for delicious Asian food
STOP 5 Swanston St/Flinders St (Tram 35, 70, 75)
Walk 5-10 mins. north along Swanston St for many fast food options, and also treats like KRISPY KREME and BEN & JERRY’S
SWANSTON HALAL FOOD CENTRE Pizza, kebabs, curry, biryani, burgers…everything! Plus, Australia’s favourite fast food – the Halal Snack Pack (HSP) – chips, cheese, meat, and sauce.
CROSSWAYS VEGETARIAN & VEGAN RESTAURANT Tasty and inexpensive all-you-can-eat from a set menu for lunch or dinner.
STOP 6 Melbourne Central & State Library Stations/La Trobe St (Tram 30, 35)

STATE LIBRARY OF VICTORIA – not just for books
Walk up the stairs to the STATE LIBRARY from Swanston St, look for the large bronze statue of St George slaying a fierce dragon, and you will see the giant chess board. There are two sets (another is next to the statue of Joan of Arc) and it’s free to play – you can watch or ask to have a game.
The library was built in 1857 and entry is free. Step inside and look up at the majestic domed La Trobe Reading Room, then walk through the building to see the infamous Australian bushranger Ned Kelly’s armour!
Sitting on the grass and people watching is also a very popular activity in Melbourne.
Walk 5-mins. north on Swanston St from the library to get to one of the best value grocery stores in Melbourne ALDI

KT MART 2-minute walk south down Elizabeth St from La Trobe St
Wide variety and cheap prices for Korean, Japanese, Filipino, and Chinese groceries and snacks
BARKADA PINOY STREETFOOD Sutherland St is off Little Lonsdale St, off Elizabeth St. It’s hidden by scaffolding, just look for the sign in the window and go up the stairs.
One of Melbourne’s best places for Filipino street food and it has a mini sari-sari store too!
STOP 3 Flagstaff Station/La Trobe St (Tram 30, 35)
QUEEN VIC MARKETS
You can buy everything at the QUEEN VIC MARKETS – from souvenirs to seafood, fresh fruit, and vegetables. Take-away and fast food is available or buy ingredients for a picnic in Flagstaff Gardens.
There is usually a free festival on the weekend celebrating different cultures with entertainment and street food.
Every Wednesday night is THE NIGHT MARKET – lots of fun!
FLAGSTAFF GARDENS
Take your shoes off and feel the grass beneath your feet in this popular city park, where you will see locals taking a break from work, walking their dogs, or hanging out with their friends and family.
You can join in by borrowing a frisbee or football from the Mission to Seafarers.
To get back to the Mission, catch tram #30 to Central Pier Stop D2, then cross over to the other platform and catch #70 or #75 to stop D5
