On 16th November 2009, the Australian Government formally acknowledged approximately 500,000 British Child Migrants and Forgotten Australians with an apology that was given on behalf of the nation.
The artworks created for this exhibition are a response to the ongoing intergenerational trauma caused by governmental care schemes, religious organisations, and charities. Whether stolen, abandoned, or removed from their families, the children were stripped of their identity, experienced a loveless environment, and were ill prepared for adult life.
Between-ing is the gathering of experiences of the past into the present for transition, to bring about a positive feeling of well-being. Lesley’s textile based creative practice of felting, backstitching, and gathering, along with stories and the trace of past generations, weave a sense of identity, place, culture, and belonging that are threaded across time and history.
